Man, that was a thorough overview of what makes traveling so tantalizing!

Recently I did this exercise where I would write myself checks once a day. Everyday the amount would increase. And I was to imagine what it's like to spend it .

Soon I ran out of things I wanted to buy with it, and all that was left was a desire to travel. I'm from Japan and have been around in North and South America, my desire is to go to Europe -- Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Italy, and so on.

You got me dreaming, for sure! Thanks!

I really enjoyed this article. I backpacked thru Europe, Morocco & Turkey by my self out of college and it really opened my eyes....I'm a much more open and tolerant person who is sensitive to other cultures/food/religion/etc as a result.
I can't wait to hear more about your experiences....

I'm pushing 30 and missed the "young, free and able to travel" phase of my life. I'm hoping to be able to do some traveling in the next year. Assuming I am self-employed by that time so I can have some time. Enjoy!

It's my first time here and I am really enjoying this blog! Travel...this is a subject my wife and talk about a lot. Once we achieve our tangible goals like our dream house and the vehicles we want and things like that, one of our top desires is to travel extensively. We are confident we are close to getting to that stage.

You are right on about how traveling boosts your self esteem. There's something about having to get yourself through a foreign country that makes you feel you can do anything. I felt completely changed after my trip to Thailand. I tell everyone i meet they must see the East. It has changed my perspective and introduced me to several new ideas and traditions I use in everyday life...like meditation, holistic alternative medicine and the like. I'm looking forward to my next trip to Australia. I love your point about traveling and war. If we all had the opportunity to see how others live and come from we'd have complete perspective.

One of my goals would be to freely travel around the world and meet up with some of the coolest people I know in this planet. I do have a friend who's in Germany right now and it will be way awesome to drop by with my group to give him a surprise visit. Haha.

It surely took most of us out of our comfort zone and work towards achieving it.

My most rewarding way to travel is to merge somehow into the fabric of where I am; to avoid being a "tourist;" to find what this place might be like to live in.. And to actually be able to live and work in another country is the best form of travel, to my mind.

You are so lucky to be able to spend four glorious months traveling! Wish I can do that too! With my kids and all, I doubt that I have as much freedom as before. I've been to China but only to Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou. China definitely has plenty to see. I hope to return some day to cover more areas. I'm from Singapore, by the way, in South East Asia.
