I would suggest that in general, people should probably stop buying "stuff". This seems to be a problem in North America (the US in particular). Here is a great video: http://www.storyofstuff.com/

We've implemented a lot of these suggestions into our lives. One of the big changes for me personally is that I get all of my books from the library or paperbackswap.

This is an awesome list, Nathalie. My wife and I began becoming more green last year, and it's amazing how easy it is if you make small steps.

The best thing we did was buy functional recycle bins and keep them in our kitchen next to the trash can. At first we thought it was unsightly, but we knew it was worth it. Now we don't really notice them, but it's as natural for us to recycle as it is to throw something away. That made the habit stick.

And once we started recycling everyday, we become more aware of all the Stuff, so we began to reduce.

The next step for us is a compost bin that works. That'll cut down on about 25% of the waste we still throw away.

My point: it's best to start small but deliberately. And these 55 tips help get the ball rolling. Thanks for writing this.

Congratulations Davina! I definitely think doing 50% of the things on the list is beyond average, and definitely makes a big difference.

I'm really interested in your studies alongside a native American elder. I grew up in the woods, between a few farms. So maybe that has something to do with it too. ;)

I can relate to your comment, "When are we going to recognize that we all have an existing romantic relationship with our planet?" I adore this planet.

There have been times in group meditations or just when I'm out and about that I feel such a strong connection with the Earth. I studied alongside a native American elder for a few years and this connection grew stronger. Plus, I grew up on a farm and that speaks for itself. I'm surprised that I'm practicing about 50% of the items on the list. A good start.

Hi Mike, thanks for letting me know your opinions. A great many of my points are indeed meant to make you think, so I think I achieved my goal.

Please note that I include both buying used and borrowing things, points #39 and #40, and that I suggest the library because it has so much to offer, not because I don't believe in reading books. From your comment it seems you skipped to parts 50 without reading the rest. Not that there's anything wrong with that of course, we're all here to make a positive change in our lives, not to fight each other.

If you doubt getting rid of your lawn is a good idea, visit Path To Freedom, and Freedom Gardens. Children can learn more about plants by indeed "playing in the garden" than they could just by playing on the grass. Educating them about the plants they need to survive is important.
